CCSC ‘breaks’ Guinness chess record

Thursday, October 27, 2011
THE Cebu City Sports Commission has achieved its first goal toward setting up a new world record in having a largest number of participants in a tournament.
CSCC chairman Edward Hayco told Sun.Star Cebu that as of Oct. 23, Cebu City had already achieved, although unofficially, their goal since the number of kids who have now participated in an in-school tournament is now close to 5,000.
“We have unofficially broken the world record since we have already hit close to 5,000 participants just coming from the public schools of Guadalupe, Don Ramon Duterte, Don Sergio Osmeña, Talamban, Labangon-Bliss among others,” Hayco said.
The current world record is held by Krasnoyork City of Russia with 1,214.
The classroom level of competition has been going on since the first week of October in most Cebu City public schools, while other schools are already holding a school-wide competition.
The knockout competitions are held daily after school hours or over the weekend in all school-wide or classroom-based competitions.
These competitions are continuous until the grand finale.
Hayco also announced the re-scheduling of the grand finals, which is now on Dec.10.
The schools that are participating in the CCSC’s Guinness World Record attempt are Don Sergio Osmeña Memorial National High School, Guadalupe Elementary School, Ramon Duterte MNHS, Labangon-Bliss ES, City Central School, Mambaling ES, Pardo ES, Zapatera ES, Don Vicente Rama ES and NHS and Talamban NHS.
